Services Overview

  • ISI is an acronym for Indian Standards Institute, the National Standards body renamed
    Bureau of Indian Standards in 1987. The ISI Mark is the official mark given to
    producers by the Bureau of Indian Standards for diverse items.
  • This ISI Mark has been considered a symbol of quality, safety, and trust since 1955.
    The ISI mark has been used as conformity marking for industrial products.
  • BIS, as a quality management organization, is responsible for providing quality
    certification as well as ensuring the quality, stability, and reliability of goods for end
    users. Whereas ISI Mark is a standard mark awarded by the Bureau of Indian
    Standards for the conformity of the product as per Indian standards.
  • The ISI mark on the product indicates that a product matches the quality standard set
    by the BIS. Under the product certification scheme, BIS gives manufacturers a license to
    use the standard Mark (ISI Mark) on products that conform to applicable Indian
    standards. ISI Mark consisting of the Licence number as ‘CM/L-XXXXXXXXXX’ at the
    bottom of the ISI Mark and the Indian standard number at the top of the
    above ISI Mark.
  • BIS certified product ensures high quality and consumer satisfaction, which
    increases revenue.

Who Can Apply ?

  • BIS license is only given to the factory (manufacturer of finished products), not to the
    Distributor/Retailer.
  • If a manufacturer has multiple factories, each of which is located at a distinct
    geographical address, the business must file a separate application for each product
    and factory location.

Prerequisite

  • Ensure conformity of their product(s) to applicable Indian Standards Specification (ISS).
  • At the factory premises, all manufacturing machinery and testing facilities should be
    available.
  • Product testing equipment and quality control personnel should be available in-house
    laboratory to test the product as per applicable ISS.
  • The manufacturer should accept the Scheme of Inspection & Testing(STI) and the
    annual marking fee.
  • The company/manufacturer should accept the terms and conditions of the License.

Steps Involved in ISI Mark Certification through BIS –

  • BIS certification can be obtained following two different procedures.
    • NORMAL Procedure ( takes 60 to 75 Days )
          • Submission of Application to BIS.
          • Audit by BIS Auditor, Sample drawn for Independent Testing.
          • Testing as per relevant Indian Standard by BIS Approved Labs.
          • If Sample complies with ISS, license shall be awarded.
          • Grant of License. 
    • SIMPLIFIED Procedure ( takes 30 to 45 Days )
          • Submission of Application to BIS.
          • Scrutiny of Application.
          • Audit by BIS Auditor, Sample drawn for Independent Testing.
          • Grant of License. 

    DURATION – Average time taken for grant of license is applicable from the date of recording
    after receipt of complete application. It may vary for reasons like delay in response to queries
    raised, if any; organizing inspection(s); deposition of samples with lab and remittance of dues.

Submit Application

  • Compile all required documents.
  • Submit the application with required documents to BIS online department.
  • BIS authority will verify the application.

Query raised (if any):

  • In case, any document or test equipment or any other requirement is missing or
    incomplete, communication will be done by email with applicant.
  • If the application is found satisfactory in all respects, it will be recorded.
  • Acknowledgement number will be allotted for future purpose.

Audit/Inspection:

  • BIS Officer will arrange a visit at factory premises of applicant on the mutually
    agreed date.
  • Remittance of inspection/audit fee.
  • BIS Officer will verify the manufacturing process, testing infrastructure and also
    test the product in your in-house laboratory.
  • BIS Officer will collect the sample, seal it, and forward it for
    testing with an independent laboratory.

Sample Testing

  • Sample collected sent to BIS Approval Laboratory.
  • BIS receive the test report
    (Charges for testing will be paid by the application firm).

Grant of License

  • Satisfactory inspection report of the auditor visited the factory premises, and test
    report of the product received according to Indian Standards.
  • Applicant should pay a License fee, advance minimum Marking fee & if any
    outstanding due.
  • Letter for Grant of License issued.

Validity & Renewal of License

  • Initially licence will be issued for a period of 1 to 2 Years.
  • Further it can be renewed for 1 to 5 years.
  • For renewal, applicant has to submit production report and renewal application
    documents for BIS certified product. Renewal fees will be charged as per the exported
    quantity for past 1 year.
  • If renewal application is made after validity expiration, late fee will be incurred.

Validity & Renewal of License

  • Initially licence will be issued for a period of 1 to 2 Years.
  • Further it can be renewed for 1 to 5 years.
  • For renewal, applicant has to submit production report and renewal application
    documents for BIS certified product. Renewal fees will be charged as per the exported
    quantity for past 1 year.
  • If renewal application is made after validity expiration, late fee will be incurred.

Note

  • Responsibility of safe deposition of sample(s) and remittance of testing charges shall
    lie with the applicant firm.
  • Applicant would be required to pay license fee; advance minimum marking fee and
    any other outstanding dues, before grant of license.

Services Benefit

SURVEILLANCE INSPECTION

Surveillance Inspection is carried out from time to time, and market samples are drawn out by the BIS in order to assess the performance of the foreign BIS licensee.

COMPLAINT REDRESSAL

In case any complaint is received against the licensee's product, then an investigation will be carried out as per IS/ISO 10002, and immediate action will be taken to redress the complaints, such as free replacement or repair
